The Manx Northern Railway was opened in 1879, connecting Ramsey in the north of the Isle of Man with the existing Isle of Man Railway at St Johns. The Foxdale Railway opened in 1886 and was operated by the Manx Northern Railway.
The Manx Northern Railway was absorbed by the Isle of Man Railway in 1904, and its lines finally closed in 1969.
The Manx Northern Railway was formed when the town of Ramsey was left off the proposals for the Isle of Man Railway. The line opened from St.John’s on the Douglas to Peel line to Ramsey in 1879, and the company also operated the Foxdale Railway from St.John’s to Foxdale, opened in 1886 to serve silver-lead mines. When traffic from the mines declined, the railway suffered a loss of income and both lines were absorbed by the Isle of Man Railway in 1904.
