The Penrhyn Railway was constructed in 1801, and used iron rails supported on slate sleepers. There were three inclines, connected by horse worked lines. To improve the transport of slate, a new railway was completed in 1879, which avoided the inclines and allowed steam haulage.

The slate sleeper dates from the original line, and includes the chairs which supported the bar section rail. The second photograph shows one of the rails.
